When Stephane found his 1992 Fire Mountain, he wanted to bring this splatter-painted classic into the modern era. By modern, we are talking 27.5 wheels, plus tires and disk brakes. No easy feat right? Especially for a bike made when canti brakes, 26” wheels and quill stems were the latest tech.
Steph found an old, warrantied steel donor frame with intact disc tabs and proceeded to transplant them. The welds aren’t pretty; in fact, Steph calls them booger welds, but they do the job and the rotors fit perfectly.
For the running gear, Steph swapped the entire drivetrain from a Kona Dew. The wheels, the BB, the cranks, and the derailleur all moved across seamlessly, in fact, the 275 wheels even fit with fenders!
To fit the modern bar and stem combo, Steph found a quill stem adaptor that slotted in the original fork.
Other little gems include this tidy disc brake routing
And this tamper-proof front axle.
In winter, the half-frame bag also serves a home for a battery for the bike's high powered commuter light.
