Kona Dream Builds: Brett's Epic 2002 Jake the Snake

Brett Paulitsch, from Edmonton shop Thirsty Rider, grew up riding in the era of Kona where the bold Hawaiian colours and themes were prevalent. "I had a Kona Coiler, a Kona Smoke, and a Kona Stuff. I was obsessed with the brand. I always wanted this model of Jake the Snake, and a co-worker of mine had one and offered it to me for free. It needed a lot of work and I couldn’t wait to make it the sick little cx/gravel bike it had the potential to be. Its taken me almost two years but I couldn’t be happier with it."

The stem and handlebar are from Whiskey Components, the bars are wrapped in the always classic Camp and Go Slow Western Rattler bar tape and sweet purple ano headset is from Wolf Tooth.

There is more Whiskey to be had front up front in the form of a Whiskey carbon fork.

The drivetrain is a mixture of SRAM and Microshift, with an Apex crankset up front mated to a Advent X rear mech and cassette out the back. A KMC chain shows that no one owns Brett.

There's so much purple ano, on this thing... Like these sweet Mallet Trail pedals from Crank Brothers.

The bike rolls on wheels that Brett custom built himself with alternating green and purple nipples. DT Swiss R500 rims a laced to SRAM X7 hubs and then shod with Panaracer Gravel King SK tires. Stopping is taken care off with a set of TRP cable actuated Spyre's with Jagwire cables and housing. The Build is finished off with a set of super tidy bags from Topo Designs.
