Rhys Verner

My name is Rhys Verner and I’m from Squamish, BC. I have been riding bikes for as long as I can remember and have raced many disciplines. Last year I decided to pursue enduro as my main focus, whereas for previous few years my main focus had been XC racing. Enduro is the best for me as I can incorporate all my skills and experiences from years of racing XC and DH. I’m currently going to university in Victoria, BC, where I’m in my fifth year studying economics. I also grew up skiing, hiking, running, playing soccer, and many other sports, and still try and do all of these things to cross-train throughout the winter. I’m pretty much always down for any sort of activity.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

I’m from Squamish and spend my summers there. Currently, I’m going to school in Victoria so I spend about 8 months of the year there. I love Squamish, though, and if I could choose where I wanted to live, I think I would pick there or definitely somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. I just love all the possibilities to do things outside.

DO YOUR BIKES REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL SETUP TRICKS TO MAKE THEM “JUST RIGHT”?

I just try and get the bikes colour coordinated and looking as dialed as possible! Race Ready.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SEASON?

Getting to do a bunch more races close to home and hopefully get some wins! It will be cool to travel around and get to ride lots of new places this year, so I’m really pumped for that!

WHO IS THE CYCLIST YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

Nino Shurter, just the most fine-tuned and dialed-in athlete I can think of. No matter what happens, he is always the man to beat.

WHERE WAS THE BEST PLACE YOU RODE IN 2019?

2019 was a crazy year of racing all over the world for me! I got to go to 4 different continents and a ton of new countries. The best place in terms of just riding a bike in would have to be Nepal. The mountains and terrain there are like nothing else, and the scale of that place was truly mind-blowing. The best place I rode in terms of trail quality would have to be Tasmania though, the builders there really know how to make a proper trail.

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ONE PERSON (DEAD OR ALIVE) WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Whoever invented daylight savings...Because now it gets dark at 4:00pm and it leaves no time for riding after school!!!

WHAT ACTOR/ACTRESS WOULD PORTRAY YOU IN A MOVIE?

That’s a tough one...probably Seth Rogan from Superbad!

HOW WOULD YOUR MOTHER DESCRIBE YOU IN JUST THREE WORDS?

busy. stressful (to her). active.

FAVORITE MOMENT OF 2019

Just travelling the whole EWS series with the team and spending time with such a sick crew. We had a really great time.

Would you rather spend money or save money?

Spend, might as well blow it if you got it. I would rather have a life full of experiences and a life full of doing fun things than have a big number sitting in my bank statement.

Would you rather drive a car or a pick-up?

I do own a car but I kind of wish I had a pick-up. The car is nice for whipping around, but it can’t really get me to the places I want to go. So, a pick-up for sure.

Would you rather watch a comedy or a horror movie?

Comedy for sure, pretty much all my favorite movies are comedies, and aside from IT, I’ve never really seen any horror movies I like.

Would you rather be unable to use search engines or unable to use social media?

Unable to use social media. I use search engines all the time to learn something I don’t know about or answer a quick question. Social media is cool and all, but it has kind of become such a part of everyday life I could go without it at this point.

Would you rather always be 10 minutes late or always be 20 minutes early?

Always be 20 minutes early. Even though I’m not that great at it I think it’s important to be on time and not make people wait for you.
