Leah Maunsell

Leah Maunsell

My name is Leah Maunsell and I’m 17 years old. I’ve been riding bikes since forever really but racing mountain bikes for about five years. My dad and brother were mountain biking first. I got my first mountain bike for Christmas when I was 11 and I began to be brought along on all of the adventures! Then, once I began racing XC and winning it, it was hard not to get hooked. And what can I say, I haven’t given up yet!

I raced XC competitively both nationally and also internationally for 3 years before switching over to Enduro. My result highlights would be being multiple-time Irish National Champion in both XC and Enduro and also winning two rounds of the Enduro World Series. It’s been a pretty successful career so far and I hope for it to continue into the future!

Personal touches on your bikes?
Well the first thing I always do with a new bike is stick on my name in the Irish tri-color. I like to change the grips and saddle to Ergon products and my favorite Crank Brothers clipless pedals to make the bike feel comfortable for me. I change all the bearings to ceramic C-Bear bearings and I also always use Maxxis tires.
Pre-ride Rituals
Before every race I am usually studying some GoPro footage from practice. I really like to have the stages planned out in my head before I hit them.
Where are you from / where do you live?
Out in the sticks in County Cork in the south of Ireland.

Favorite place to ride
La Thuile, Italy. Absolutely amazing!
Three things we don’t know about you?
  1. Some of you might not know that I am still in second level education with two years left until I head to university.
  2. I love my iPhone!
  3. I’ve just got my learner’s driving license and so cornering is still foot out and flat out!
Cats or dogs?
Dogs – everybody needs a trail dog. Dougal is our trail dog!
Would you rather be eaten by a lion or be eaten by ants?
A lion. I think it would make for a more exciting story!
Zombie apocalypse or alien invasion?
Alien invasion. I wouldn’t mind meeting some aliens, I'd like to ask them if there's any good trails in space and if E.T. still has that bike!
Would you rather become a superhero or a supervillain?
A superhero. I like playing good cop.
Sunrise or sunset?
It has to be sunset. It reminds me of the end of an amazing day filming for the Kona Big Honzo video at a lighthouse on Sheep’s Head at sunset. The views were unforgettable!

Favorite moment of 2016

It would have to have been the Enduro World Series event in Ireland. Winning in front of a home crowd is an incredible feeling. The Irish don't do things in halves so you can imagine the noise and encouragement out on the hill – it was awesome!
