I am a cyclocross racer from Britain, currently living in the south of France. I have had 67 UCI Pro wins over the last 12 years, have been British National Champion nine times, European champion twice, and have a bronze medal from the World Championships. I love racing 'cross – to me it is the best sport in the world and my Major Jakes have a slight hold on my heart!

Personal touches on your bikes?
My Major Jakes have a lot of special parts, they are my robot bikes as there isn't a standard cable on them – they are Shimano Di2 Dura-Ace electronic hydraulic disc. (This makes for a very happy mechanic.) They have Easton bars, seat post and stem. I use Challenge tires on FFWD carbon disc wheels and have 12 pairs with a variety of different treads. The UCI minimum weight is 6.8kg and my bikes weigh in at 7kg – and they are the most beautiful things ever!
Pre-ride Rituals
Not really. I tend to do a very similar routine on race day with pre-riding a course and testing tires, pressures, etc, but that's more so that I don't miss anything. When training pre-ride rituals definitely include the "arm test", where you stick your arm out of the bedroom window to decide what clothes you need to wear on your training ride!
Where are you from / where do you live?
I was born in St Albans, just north of London in England. I now live in a tiny little village called Rennes Les Bains in the foothills of the Pyrenees in south-west France.
Riding with Kona since
Winter 2009
Goals for the 2017 season?
Not to break my collar bone, as I did this past year! My 2017-18 season goals include winning Nationals, winning races in America, getting back into the top 10 in the world ranking and a top 5 at the World Championships in 2018.
Favorite place to ride
The French Alps or where I live now in the south of France.
Three things we don’t know about you?
  1. I try to speak Flemish and did an interview after a cross race on Belgian TV live to 650,000 viewers.
  2. I love expensive gin!
  3. My house has some stones in its back wall which were stolen from a local castle over 200 years ago!
Cats or dogs?
Husky dog. Our friends took us to their friends' island on a lake in New Hampshire and they were Husky breeders. They had the most gorgeous pure white Husky puppy you have ever seen. Since then I want one!
Would you rather be eaten by a lion or be eaten by ants?
Lion. It would be quicker and a better story for your remaining loved ones to tell!
Zombie apocalypse or alien invasion?
Zombies, because I know how to fool them – I've watched World War Z!
Would you rather become a superhero or a supervillain?
Superhero. I smile too much to be a villain. My super power would be to initiate instant karma. It would lead to some fantastic YouTube clips too!
Sunrise or sunset?
Sunset… I'm never awake early enough for sunrise!

Favorite moment of 2016

I love winning and I've won a few races but to me the best moment of 2016 was when I was allowed to ride my 'cross bike again after my crash at the European Championships. I had a broken collar bone and various other injuries and had the collar bone pinned. It was a fairly brutal ordeal and took three weeks before I was able to ride outside. Luckily I could train on the road on my Major Jake with disc brakes and 'cross tubs pumped up. But I was banished from off road riding until it had healed.
When I went to my six week check up the surgeon said I could try riding off road. I think he thought I'd be riding in a field, but we were at the Namen World Cup supporting NEXT Wyman – Kona rider Amira Mellor so I rode some of the course. It felt amazing to be able to ride the mud and grass and descents and not have much pain. It really made me happy, so it has to be the best moment of the year!
